Known for his vibrant murals, paintings, and mixed media works, Haring had a meteoric 10-year career in which he united New York City’s uptown establishment with its downtown art scene. The Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown hosts one of the year’s most exciting new art exhibits, featuring the works of LGBTQ icon and ‘80s pop art legend Keith Haring. At these and other Pride events in New York, including engaging virtual offerings, LGBTQ New Yorkers and visitors will come together again in the birthplace of the modern movement to show love for each other, for the community, and for New York! Highlights include the return of Pridefest in Greenwich Village, the Let Love Bloom Wedding Marathon in Central New York, Long Island Pride. Although 2021 is far from a normal Pride year, communities are starting to gather together in-person once again to celebrate Pride safely. I tried to captured the atmosphere in a candid style to hopefully show you what my eyes saw with a few photos.Pride is always an exciting time in New York, and this year’s events bring with it an extra sense of hope. I felt so comfortable, sweating aside these masses of people so unashamedly being their brightest and most authentic selves. It was very contagious and although it was a hot one, I never found myself in a hurry to leave (until the dehydration hit - then it was my time). Every which way I turned I heard people exchanging compliments, giving high fives, laughing, cheering, dancing, and any other kind gesture you can think of. I walked the streets of New York for three hours, and I must say, the diverse crowds were filled with endless joy, acceptance and glitter - so much glitter. I have little to compare it to, but after what I saw, it seems to be incomparable. Well actually, I’ve only ever attended one other Pride event in my life, and that was last year in Los Angeles. The people of New York City really turned out for the 2017 LGBTQ+ Pride Parade and brought with them a roar like no other. I tried to captured the atmosphere in a candid style to hopefully show you what my eyes saw with a few photos.
